Utila

// January 22nd, 2005 // Honduras

Alrighty, we made it here to Utila just fine… coming from costa rica we spent one night in Managua Nicaraugau or however you spell that crazy place… it was a pretty boring city…. we ate and checked out email… kinda sketchy after dark so i spent most of my time reading… not really been in the mood for drinking lately… though tonight i enjoyed some free rum’s.

after managua we got back on the bus at 5am and headed towards honduras… the border crossing was way easier… though they had drug? dogs sniff our bags and the bus… maybe they were sniffing for fruits, but if they were they didnt find my banana’s! anyways… we just had to wait while the busline took care of our passports and all that good stuff… i got some good swiss chocolate from the duty free shop.

I am very impressed with the scenery in honduras… I was preoccupied on the bus with writing and reading through nicaraugua but honduras is so pretty… lots of cloud covered mountains and the like… some pretty lakes … yadda yadda. hard to take pictures of from the bus window though… not enough time to stop to enjoy everything either! shitty.

Anyways… we got to the capital of Honduras, which i cant pronounce let alone begin to spell. it was a nice city… we walked around at night and saw central park and the big church… got some food from a street vendor then went to bed as almost everything closed down at 8ish.

this morning we checked out all the street vendors… i passed on some soccer jersey that were only $6 or so… maybe next time. We caught a bus over to La Ciaba or something similar… we caught the ferry just in time and are now on the island of Utila in the city of the same name… we got here as the sunset so i dont know much of how the city looks.

i went to a dive shop recommend by a friend of brendan cotters and am signed up to learn how to scuba dive… they raised the prices a month or two ago so i have to pay $216 to be certified… i do get 2 fun dives at the end, which is equal to $40… i was hoping to pay $160 for just diving so i guess it’s a wash. Supposedly its the cheapest place in the world to learn… i’m not sure as i have nothing to compare it to… i’m pretty excited to learn.

First thing tomorrow i do laundry.. its been too long… the last week has been so hectic… traveling almost non stop. Costa Rica, Nicaruagua, honduras… too fast. Not enough sleep, i’m dead tired. clothes are filthy. then i have to study for diving… i start with some lecture typ ething tomorrow night… then videos the next morning and into the water that afternoon.

thats about it… i hope all of you are doing well!

    Man, just reading your itinerary makes me exhausted. O, do me a favor - if you see any treasure while diving, grab me a souveniur. I prefer gold jewelry from several centuries ago.

    I prefer mermaids…..anyway, yeah, your pace is amazing. Keep it up. Like you said, keep in mind what you’re getting and for what price instead of comparing it to what stuff costs around you. I caught myself bitching about a 1 hr tuk tuk ride that cost me 40 bot instead of the usual 20 until I realized shit, that’s only a buck. Have fun diving! Chance of a lifetime.
